For a Boise-area Idaho criminal-history report, the statewide service is Idaho State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI). It offers name-based and fingerprint-based checks. A local police-record check covers that agency’s own records; it is not BCI’s statewide product. An employer or licensing program requiring a national check may use a separate authorized agency process.
BCI does not notarize name-search results. Choose the fingerprint process when positive fingerprint identification or a notarized result is required, and mark the notary request on the form. Ask the recipient to confirm the acceptable product before booking fingerprinting, since taking prints and ordering a particular background report are separate tasks.
ISP’s public fingerprint service is at 700 South Stratford Drive, Suite 120, Meridian, ID 83642, not its district offices. The lobby’s published hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., excluding government-observed holidays. No appointment is required; bring a current state or government-issued photo ID and payment.
Fingerprint capture costs $10 for the first card and $5 for each additional card. This does not pay for the criminal-history search itself. ISP accepts cash, check or credit/debit card; its published card surcharge is $1 plus 2.5% of the transaction. Tell the technician which agency and form will receive the card.
Use BCI’s Name-Based Criminal Background Check Form with its payment authorization. Provide the person’s names and aliases, date of birth, sex, race and address, together with the requester’s signed contact and return-address fields. The Social Security number is optional. An optional subject waiver must be signed within 180 days of submission.
The fee is $20. Submit by hand delivery, fax or mail as the current service instructions permit; emailed requests are not processed. Without a signed waiver, an arrest older than 12 months without a disposition cannot be released to a non-criminal-justice agency. A missing entry therefore does not establish a complete absence of history.
Use the fingerprint request form revised January 1, 2026, and attach a complete rolled applicant fingerprint card. Include identity and alias details, current address, date and place of birth, descriptive information, citizenship, the subject’s signature, and the fingerprinting official’s dated signature. The card must be dated within 180 days of submission.
The statewide fingerprint check is $25, separate from capture charges. Include the payment authorization or required payment and hand-deliver or mail the package to BCI at the Meridian address. The form asks for the requester’s mailing address for results. BCI does not provide these responses by telephone, fax or email.
ISP’s dated notice makes national checks $37 for the listed employment, licensing and NCPA employee categories, and $35 for NCPA volunteers, effective January 1, 2026. The service page still contains older NCPA figures of $33.25 and $31.25. Because those official amounts conflict, confirm the applicable total with the requesting entity or BCI before sending a national-check payment.
For an agency-sponsored national check, obtain that organization’s forms, authorization and submission instructions. Do not assume the general $25 Idaho fingerprint form includes FBI information. BCI’s NCPA program is for qualified entities; the entity is responsible for the required process and receiving the authorized response.
Idaho’s repository is based on arrest records reported to BCI by Idaho criminal-justice agencies. A locally held event can be absent if the required arrest fingerprint information was not submitted. The Idaho-only check does not include other states’ records, FBI records or federal-court convictions. A dismissed charge may remain with the dismissal noted.
A name search uses the identifiers supplied and can be affected by aliases or false dates of birth. Examine the disposition as well as the charge and do not treat a same-name match as definitive identity. If you need to resolve whether an entry belongs to you, the fingerprint-based route is the relevant next step.
BCI says a person disputing a background result may request a certified record through its fingerprint procedure; the fingerprint-based check is processed without charge when challenging a record. After reviewing it, submit supporting information from the arresting agency or court. Ask BCI how to identify the submission as a challenge before sending routine search payment.
The Applicant Unit’s published telephone is 208-884-7130, option 1. Use it to clarify missing requirements, a fee conflict or the appropriate challenge process. Ordinary requests are handled first-come, first-served without a general guaranteed completion time on the personal-check form; allow for mailing rather than assuming walk-in fingerprint capture produces an immediate report.
